In 1930s Andros, a Greek Cycladic island rich in maritime tradition, 20 year-old Orsa Saltaferou (Penelope Tsilika) is passionately in love with sailor Spyros Matlabes (Andreas Konstantinou). Taciturn Orsa does not reveal her secret to anyone. Not even to her younger sister Moscha (Sofia Kokkali). A free spirit and full of dreams, Moscha aspires to leave the island and escape what local tradition dictates: women marrying sailors and spending their lives in loneliness, in homes often struck by grief when husbands perish at sea. The girls’ mother, Mina Saltaferou (Anneza Papadopoulou), a disciplined but shrewd wife of captain Savvas Saltaferos (Vassilis Vassilakis) who prefers the Atlantico Sur from his home, is truly at the helm of the family in the absence of her husband. Her own tough life has convinced her that love bears nothing more than trouble and pain. Her priority is to build up the family wealth and marry off her daughters to wealthy husbands. She turns down Spyros’ marriage proposal to Orsa as he is not yet a captain and comes from a humble background. Orsa is devastated but succumbs to her mother’s wishes and marries Nikos Vatokouzis (Maximos Moumouris), a captain and ship owner. After some years, Spyros returns to the island as an accomplished and wealthy captain. With good connections and prospects, he is now eligible in the eyes of Mina to marry Moscha. The two couples share the same house that Mina built with her husband’s earnings as dowry for her daughters; the ground floor intended for Orsa and the first floor for Moscha. The thin cypress-wood floorboards of the ceiling allow the sounds of everyday life and love making to drip from the floor above to the one below. Suppressed feelings are inevitably rekindled and cruel games of fate reveal secrets and lead to devastation at the break out of World War II.
